Concept of Vicegerency in Islam

Overview

Human beings are special creation among the creatures. They are sent down on earth to manage and develop the world based on God's law. Beside that they have to worship Allah while performing the job. Allah had created human beings with element of nature
(fitrah) and potential as a tool to help them carrying out the duty. By grace of God, He had sent down his messengers to the mankind so that they could be guided while performing the job. Naturally there are two kind of people regarding to the teaching of the prophet. Those who are believed in the prophet's teaching and surely they will success in life and vice versa. In the Hereafter both of them will be judged justly before the Almighty Allah swt

Quranic Verses Related to the Creation of Man

• Behold, thy Lord said to the angels; "I will create A vicegerent on earth." They said: "Wilt Thou place therein one who will make Mischief therein and shed blood? Whilst we do celebrate Thy praises And glorify Thy holy (name)?" He said; "I know what ye know not." (Al-Baqarah (2): 30)

# It is by God's willing that human beings are to manage the world. As for this, Allah swt has created human beings with special attributes which enable them to carry out the responsibilities as the "khalifah" on the earth. These do not exist in other God's creatures. Examples of such are the ability to be creative, innovative, analytical and many other abilities which differ man from other creations of God.

# The law that human beings had to implement in their everyday life (as khalifah) is very well complemented with the law of nature. Therefore, there should be any contradiction between the actions of man and the environment because God's law are perfect.

# The responsibilities that go with the duty of human beings as a caliph on earth are considered virtuous and God had given such an honour to man among his other creatures.

• Khalifah job: special post and it is as a God honored upon mankind among his creations.

# God's knowledge are supreme for nothing is able to penetrate beyond it except to a part of the knowlwdge that is bestowed by him. When the angels questioned God as to why He elected Man as the vicegerent although Man do all kinds of mischief and even shed blood, Allah swt assured them that he knew a more than the angels do.

• And he taught Adam the names Of all things; then He placed them Before the angels, and said: "Tell Me The names of these if ye are right." (Al-Baqarah (2): 31)

Allah swt had given Adam a knowledge which should assist him in carrying out his duty as khalifah on earth. Teaching Adam the names of all things was a symbol of providing Adam with knowledge. On the other hand, the tool (knowledge) was not necessary for
the angels because nature of their jobs did not require them to have the knowledge.

The angels are very obedient to Allah swt for they will only do what He says. Allah swt said in Verses 6 of Surah At-tahrim:

"Who flinch not (from Executing) the Commands They receive from Allah, But do (precisely) what They are commanded." (Attahrim (66): 6)


• They said: "Glory to Thee: of knowledge We have none, save what Thou Hast taught us: in truth it is Thou Who art perfect in knowledge and wisdom." (Al-Baqarah (2): 32)

• He said: "O Adam! Tell them Their names." When he had told them their names, Allah said: "Did I not tell you That I know the secrets of heaven And earth, and I know what ye reveal. And what you conceal?" (Al-Baqarah (2): 33)

Finally, the angels accepted their weaknesses and knew the limitation of their capabilities when they admitted to God in surah al-Baqarah verse 33.
